A dental school in Philadelphia was performing dental services for the poor. While this in and of itself is very commendable, it is unfortunate that the primary restorative material offered to the underprivileged is mercury fillings. Karen Burns and several outspoken advocates were going to educate dental patients about the hazards of mercury fillings.
Filming on the inside, it was unfortunate to see mercury being used without precaution. There was zero occupational safety precautions being implemented. But this should come as no surprise as the dentists I overheard were mocking of the activists outside and unaware of the hazards dental mercury presents during use. The dentist there that day honestly felt they were doing a great service, and I feel that overall they were, with the exception of placing a toxic substance in patients mouths.
Karen Palmer, Karen Burns, Freya Koss and several other outspoken advocates spent the day outside the dental school educating dental patients about the hazards of mercury fillings and that they had a choice of restorative material.
